Students - Japan Scholarship Programme

'Vulcanus in Japan' is a scholarship programme run by the EU and the Japanese Government for science and engineering students. Participants are fully funded for four months of training in Japanese language, followed by eight months with a Japanese company.

The programme is verypopular, with 20 times as many applicants as places. However, there are no British students on the programme this year and so the EU delegationin Japan is strongly encouraging applications from UK science andengineering students at third year undergraduate level or above or at postgraduate level.

UK science students have a very good chance of being funded to learn and experience the language and business culture of the second-largesteconomy in the world. Japan spends 3.5 per cent of GDP on research anddevelopment, mainly in scientific fields, and the majority of this research is carried out within industry. Sending students on thisprogramme will not only provide them with a great opportunity fordevelopment, it may also lead to valuable links with Japanese industryfor your institution.

The deadline for applications for the programme beginning September2010 is 20 January 2010.
